Land is gradually eroded by wind and rain, its surface changing over time. Beneath this landscape lies Aji stone.
Focusing on this natural process of “erosion,” I translated it into a sculptural process using sandblasting.
By blasting sand against the surface of the stone, and controlling where and how intensely it is eroded through masking, an uneven landscape emerges within simple forms such as cylinders and square prisms.
Rather than “shaping” the stone, the intention is to create traces of time within it. From these surfaces, a function emerged: small stands for holding glasses and jewelry.
This work reconstructs, through human-made processes, the landscapes that nature creates over long periods of time—an attempt to give a product its own landscape, much like the landscape of Aji, its place of origin.
